CHIPS QUINN SCHOLARS PROGRAM for Diversity in Journalism:
A program that offers training, mentoring, paid internships and cash awards to college students or recent graduates who are pursuing careers in the media.
Application deadline: Applications should be postmarked by Oct. 1, 2014.
(Please note that late applications will be accepted -- but priority will be given
to those students who meet deadline.)
Applicants will be unable to save or make corrections to the application once it has been submitted. Therefore, it must be completed in one sitting. Please allow up to 30 minutes to complete. We recommend that you print this page before continuing to use as a reference while completing the application.
To qualify as an applicant for this program:
1. Applicant must be committed to pursuing a career in journalism
2. Applicant must be a college junior, senior or recent graduate. (Sophomores may apply – but first consideration will be given to upper-classmen.)
3. Applicant must be able to attend the seven-day, all-expenses-paid training (in January or May) in Nashville, Tenn.
4. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident
5. In most cases, applicants must have a car for the internship
The following constitutes a completed application:
- A completed online application
- A color headshot photo
- A resume
- A college transcript (unofficial transcript is acceptable)
- Two letters of recommendation. Persons recommending must be familiar with the applicant’s work and personal characteristics. Letters of recommendation should be submitted on official letterhead and should include the contact information of the person providing it. Letters of recommendation may be submitted via e-mail to kcatone@newseum.org or mailed to the address below.
- An essay (200-400 words) on why you want to be a journalist/Chips Quinn Scholar
- Journalistic work samples:
Reporters and copy editors should submit clear photocopies of published articles on 8 ½ by 11" single-sided paper. Do not copy stories on both sides of the paper and do not reduce size of print. If stories are oversized, use 8 ½ by 14" paper or send a tearsheet. Class assignments are accepted but must be typed. DO NOT use folders or binders in submitting your package.
Photographers should provide portfolios of 15 - 25 photos on a DVD or thumb drive with images saved as jpegs. Portfolios should include captions. Do not put images into any viewing program or slideshow format.
Multimedia journalists and graphic designers should submit 6 - 10 of their work samples on a DVD or thumb drive.
