Dear Business Owner,
Missouri statutes require that proprietors, corporations, partnerships, or associations owning or controlling tangible personal property to file an assessment each year declaring the business personal property owned on January 1. All county assessors are charged with the discovery and assessment of all real and personal property in their respective counties.
Business personal property is anything with a determinable life longer than one year used in a trade/profession/business to produce income.
Examples of business personal property are office equipment, computers and peripheral equipment, fixtures, furnishings, motor vehicles, tools, construction equipment and machinery; generally anything on an asset list filed with your federal tax return. Inventory for resale is not included; however, parts and supplies are. Property is assessed at the original cost less freight, installation, and sales/use tax. The assessor applies the proper depreciation schedule by applying the years since acquisition to determine appraised value. That value is multiplied by the statutory 33-1/3 percent establishing the assessed value. The levy rate is determined by the taxing entities for the physical location of the personal property.
You may now file your business registration online using this web form (Click "Next" below). If you would prefer to print and mail a paper version, please click here. You are still able to fill it out online before printing.
Please be as complete and thorough as possible so that a new account can be created or verify that the account already exists in our records. Account status cannot be determined until this information is received. Upon the establishment of a new account, assessment forms will be mailed to your business. Subsequently, a business personal property assessment form will be sent after January 1 each year. Even if there are no changes, an assessment must be filed each year.
